Spring Caravan Checklist: Get Road-Ready

10 Essential Tips to De-Winterise Your Touring Caravan for Spring
Spring is the perfect time to bring your touring caravan back to life after months in storage. If you’re not sure where to start, these practical, detailed tips will guide you through the de-winterising process and get you road-ready with confidence.
1. Check and Inflate Your Tyres
Tyres lose pressure over time and can develop cracks or flat spots during winter.
Tip: Look for wear, bulges, or cracks. Check tread depth and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure—including the spare. Replace tyres if they’re over 5 years old.
2. Inspect the Exterior Thoroughly
Winter weather can cause damage to seals, bodywork and fittings.
Tip: Walk around the caravan and look for any cracks, loose panels, or sealant deterioration. Give the body a good clean using warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Use a soft cloth or chamois to dry.
3. Clean and Air Out the Interior
A closed-up caravan can trap stale air and moisture, leading to mould and musty odours.
Tip: Open all windows and roof vents to let fresh air in. Vacuum floors and cushions, wipe all surfaces with disinfectant and clean any hard-to-reach areas. Use moisture absorbers to help prevent future damp — we have moisture traps available in our accessory store.
4. Test the Water System
It’s important to clean out and sterilise the water system before use.
Tip: Drain and flush your system thoroughly with clean water. For sterilisation, use a suitable cleaning solution such as Puriclean, available in our accessory store. After sterilising, rinse the system completely with clean water and inspect carefully for any signs of leaks or cracks before use.
5. Check for Damp and Water Damage
Damp can build up unnoticed and lead to costly repairs.
Tip: Inspect corners, window frames, under beds, and inside cupboards for signs of mould, staining, or softness. If available, use a damp meter to get accurate readings and identify problem areas early.
6. Reconnect and Check the Gas Supply
When handling gas systems, safety is essential. Ensure that gas bottles are securely fastened and valves are functioning properly. Check hoses and regulators for any signs of wear or damage and replace them if necessary.
Tip: Before using any appliance, always test for leaks by applying soapy water to the connections—look for bubbles, not just rely on the smell of gas. Gas pigtails should be replaced every five years for optimal safety. It’s crucial to have a Gas Safe Registered Engineer handle any installation or maintenance of gas systems, as they are trained and certified to ensure everything is safe.
7. Test Safety Alarms and Electrical Systems
Functioning alarms and electrics are vital for safe touring.
Tip: Test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Check the condition of wiring, plugs, and leisure batteries. Turn on interior lights, the fridge and any electric heating if plugged into mains.
We sell a variety of carbon monoxide alarms in the shop to suit your needs and help ensure your safety while on the road!
8. Inspect Brakes, Hitch, and Road Lights
If you’re towing your caravan, this step is essential for road safety.
Tip: Check the hitch for smooth operation and proper lubrication. Test the handbrake and inspect the breakaway cable. Connect to your tow vehicle and test all external lights, including brake, reverse and indicator lights. Also, check all hitch pads to ensure they’re secure and in good condition to prevent unnecessary wear and tear.
9. Restock Your Caravan Essentials
After winter, you may find that some supplies are outdated or missing. It’s the perfect time to restock and ensure you’re fully prepared for your next adventure.
Tip:
-
Refill your first aid kit
-
Replace expired fire extinguishers
-
Restock kitchen, cleaning, and bathroom supplies
-
Ensure you have all necessary tools, fuses, spare bulbs, and batteries

10. Plan for Next Winter
A little forward thinking now will make next year’s de-winterising much easier.
Tip: Make a list of maintenance or upgrades needed before next winter. Consider investing in a breathable caravan cover and think about removing soft furnishings and storing them in a dry place to prevent damp build-up.
Bonus: Take a Short Test Drive
A short drive is a great way to ensure everything is working before your first trip.
Tip: Listen for unusual noises, check the towing stability, and ensure the brakes feel responsive. After the drive, double-check tyre pressure and torque the wheel nuts if needed.
With your caravan clean, safe and fully checked over, you’re ready to hit the road and embrace the adventures of the season ahead.
